The YukonCarcross, short for Caribou Crossing, is a village of about 300 people wedged between Bennett Lake and Nares Lake, an hour and change south of Whitehorse on the South Klondike Highway. It punches far above its weight for scenery: the Carcross Desert (technically the world's smallest desert, though geologists will argue), the Montana Mountain range rising straight from the water, and the White Pass & Yukon Route railway that still runs seasonally to Skagway.
The redeveloped Carcross Commons is a cluster of buildings painted with Tlingit designs, set around carved totem poles, anchored by Caribou Crossing Coffee and the Matthew Watson General Store (oldest operating store in Yukon), popular for ice cream on hot summer days. The Bistro on Bennett and a bakery a short walk from the Commons round out the village's food options.
Visitors spend anywhere from a few hours to a couple of nights here, with mountain bikers exploring Montana Mountain's purpose-built singletrack, some of the best in northern Canada, often staying longer. Most village services close between October and May, so shoulder-season visitors should check what's actually open before planning around it.

Ride Montana Mountain singletrack
Access from the Sam McGee Trailhead off Bennett Avenue. 65+ km of professionally built mountain bike trails ranging from green to double-black, most flowing downhill from the ridge. Bring your own bike if you can. Rental and shuttle services in the village are seasonal and change from year to year, so check what is operating at Carcross Commons before you travel, or arrange a rental in Whitehorse on the way down.
Walk the Carcross Desert dunes
Signed pullout on the South Klondike Highway 2 km north of the village. Sand dunes surrounded by boreal forest, about 1 km² total. Walk anywhere. Best in golden hour; watch for the occasional sandboarder in summer. Free.
White Pass railway to Fraser
The historic narrow-gauge railway runs Carcross-Skagway and Carcross-Fraser (BC) in summer only, mid-May to mid-September. From Carcross station on Bennett Avenue. The Skagway roundtrip is a full day; the Fraser turn is shorter.
Bennett Lake beach and paddle
Sandy beach right at the village end of Bennett Lake, accessible from the wooden footbridge. Water is glacial and cold. Kayak rentals available at Carcross Commons in July-August. Do not swim more than 20 metres from shore in cold water.
Walk the historic buildings tour
Pick up the free Historic Sites Carcross Walking Tour pamphlet at the Visitor Centre and follow it through the village, identifying the century-old homes and buildings still standing, including the Skookum Jim House, built in 1899. A self-guided way to connect the village's gold-rush and First Nations history to the buildings you're actually looking at.
Hike to the surrounding peaks
Montana, Nares, and Caribou Mountains all rise directly from the village and have established hiking trails to their summits, each with sweeping views back over Carcross, Bennett Lake, and the desert. Getting around & the essentials
On foot: Village loop and footbridge (2 km). From Carcross Commons, walk south past the Matthew Watson General Store to Bennett Avenue, cross the wooden footbridge over the Nares River, follow the shoreline path along Bennett Lake to the sandy beach, loop back via the White Pass railway station. Flat, easy, mostly wooden boardwalk and gravel. Under an hour with photo stops.
By road: You drive to Carcross from Whitehorse on the South Klondike Highway (Highway 2), a scenic 75 km, about 1 hour, plowed year-round. Watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk. No public transit. In summer there are day-tours from Whitehorse; confirm the current operators and departure days with the Whitehorse visitor centre before you count on one. Within Carcross itself everything is walkable in five minutes. The White Pass railway runs summer only and is a tourist experience, not practical transport.
